Welcome to our Senior Dog Blog

This blog is dedicated to all the dogs out there that have a few great years under their fur! The dog who has seen you mature, seen you through hard times, seen you laugh and cry or may have been there through a relationship or two. The "old faithful" guy or girl in your life that you know would always be waiting for you to come home with open paws! The one who is always happy to see you and can't wait to get your love and attention but would always give you so much more in return. We know, in our hearts, that even without a spoken word, this dog has helped us through many hard times and has been there to rejoice in our good times. We thank you for always being there and for somehow just always knowing what we need to make us feel better.

Here's hoping, that through this blog, we can give back at least a portion of the joy that they have brought to our lives over the many years.

The Doggy Zen Den was founded after years of working with dogs both in Canada and the U.S. I was driven from a young age by my compassion for animals and as I grew older I sought to provide a service to animals that would encompass personal touch, love and health benefits. I teach seminars & workshops to dozens of dog owners. While my practice is inclusive of all dogs, I have focused a majority of my efforts on working with senior and shelter dogs. I received my canine massage training from Midwest Natural Healing and have attended certification courses in Bach Flower Remedies, Pet First Aid and Canine Behavior. I currently run 2 blogs. I’ve registered over 400 hours of hands on experience working with dogs in a massage and stretching capacity and service clients from Oshawa to Burlington. I am also a certified Animal Reiki Practitioner. I was recently asked to become a resident Practitioner at Cherry Valley Retreat (http://cherryvalleyretreat.com/) and will be hosting a series of workshops on Holistic Stress & Anxiety Relief Methods for Dogs. For the Love of our Dogs

True dog lovers know that they will do pretty much anything for their dogs’ health and well being. Many non-pet loving individuals will look at us a little funny, perhaps snickering under their breath about how “nuts” we are for buying that doggy coat, those Muttluks or spending more on their food than we, perhaps may even spend on our own!

Well, they can laugh all they want. We have the privilege of coming home each and every day to a dog that showers us with love and affection, sits with us when we’re feeling sad and makes us laugh at the silliest things they do!

Once you experience that connection with your dog, there’s no looking back! We’re hooked!

Over my many years, I’ve had a number of dogs, both pure breds and “mutts”. I’ve loved them all very dearly, very deeply and all in very different ways. Yes, I’m going to say it. They were and still are my babies.

I’m very happy to say that as times have changed, so has our view as a society on how we treat and care for our animals. More and more animal lovers are realizing that proper care of your animal requires diligence, work and initiative. I’d like to call this a labour of love! We are banded together as animal lovers and are demanding products and services which will give them the quality of life they deserve!

A true dog lover will have the patience and diligence to work with the animal to bring them to their fullest potential, seeking to provide harmony, inner peace and overall well being.

There are a number of relaxation and calming methods that can be used such as:

• Canine Massage
• Animal Reiki
• Bach Flower Essences
• Doggy Meditation
• Doga
• Music Therapy; and
• Neck Rolling

These methods are some of my favourite.

Many traditional solutions would be crate training, anti-anxiety medications and the like.

I believe that our society as a whole is slowly moving away from the toxic and manmade stimulants and anti-depressants, so should we as dog lovers. Alternative methods are the key in our dog’s health and well being.

Join me as we explore the many methods of relaxation.
